READ 1 Samuel 17:49-51
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
Sometimes we say “that was in the past” or “the past is in the past.” Sometimes, something we used to deal with or the thing that used to trip us up somehow keeps showing its ugly head. It always seems to show up right in the time that we think we have victory over that one thing. Trust me when I say, we are human, we have all felt that. It can sometimes make you feel like, “ Did I even let that go in the first place?” or “Did I even have victory over that?” Let me tell you again; we are human; we have all felt that way.
In 1 Samuel 17:51, we see that David has just slain the giant Philistine, Goliath. He ran over to the giant, drew the giants sword from his sheath, and cut off his head. When I read that, it made me think that if he had already killed Goliath with a stone, then why did he cut off the head of something already dead? I believe small victories are given to us from God, but the power in the victory is the testimony we live after that victory. David slew the giant with what he had with him, and what he knew from previous victories would do the job. When David, cut off that giants head, he proved to those around him that the one thing they thought would stop the Israelites was dead.
If there is something in your life that you have given to Jesus, and there are little things that keep making it show back up, or if there is something in your life that you can’t seem to get the victory over, let’s first kill it with what we know we have and then cut it off for the enemy to see. If you use what has already been proven to work, the Word of God, which is sharper than any two-edged sword, you will achieve that first victory for yourself. (Hebrews 4:12) Then, declare to the enemy and fouls of the air that come to pick at the thoughts in your mind, I am cutting off the head of that giant in my life! Off with the head of the lies and torment that have been bombarding you. In Hebrews 4:12, it says the Word of God divides asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Use your sword to cut off the head of your giant.
After David had cut off Goliath’s head, he lifted the head of the giant, and the Philistines saw their champion was dead…THEY FLED. The enemy knows you aren’t playing games when you walk in victory and kill the very thing that once made you feel you were not victorious.
